If you feel you aren't receiving good service. don't feel compelled to tip. Tipping should be reserved for movers who do their job right. If a mover goes out of their way to accommodate you, then tip accordingly.

  1. 1. Provide cold drinks, coffee or whatever is suitable to the weather and time of day. Also provide food if the move takes a while and extends over the lunch period; pizza, sandwiches, something quick they can eat while on the move.

  2. 2. If there's only one or two movers, tip between $60-70 (to split if there are two) depending on how hard the move was (stairs, heavy boxes, awkward items, etc.).

  3. 3. More than one mover, tip $30 per person and give all the money to the head mover or supervisor so they can divide it afterward.

  4. 4. If you received absolutely amazing service, tips can reach up to $100. But the movers need to be really good, really helpful and do something beyond the call of duty, such as helping with last minute packing and moving. taking the time to carefully wrap fragile items. or in my case once, helping me catch an escaped cat. That's definitely the sign of a really good and caring mover.

In all my many moves, only once I didn't tip. It was a horrible move and if you follow this site at all, you've probably already read about how I needed the police, a news team and help from an insider to get my stuff back. But besides that experience, I've always had great service.

One thing to keep in mind when tipping, Movers should be on time (unless they provide a good reason), treat your things with respect and be organized.

My daughter moved last year from два bdrm to два bdrm два hours distance from each other. The house she moved to included a bunch of stairs up from the sidewalk, then stairs to the upper floor of the house, and more stairs behind the house for her patio furniture, etc.

There were три guys and they were sopping wet with sweat by the time they left. I actually called the owner of the moving company (family run operation), and asked him what we should tip. He hemmed and hawed. I asked would $50 each be fair and he said absolutely. The owner didn't want the tip on the bill, so she wrote a separate check to "cash" for $150 so the guys could go cash the check.

Her employer paid for тридцать days in a hotel until she could find a house to buy, but no moving costs on top of that.

If I was you and you needed to pay them the tip separately, I'd get them to sign a receipt that you paid the tip. Then I'd submit it along with the other bills to the employer, and see if they balk.

Tipping the movers

Yes, it is customary to tip your movers. but it is never obligatory. You should only tip them if they showed professionalism in handling your belongings and displayed healthy customer service habbits.

In your case if everything would go smooth you would be expected to tip them $15 each ($20 if you have some heavy furniture or walk-up). When tipping make sure you give the tip to each mover individually. For a better assessment of what would be considered an adequate tip use our movers tipping calculator.

Keep in mind though that some things in the overall service that might angry or irritate you (such as underestimation of actual move time, or some misleading information from the salesperson that implicated your entire moving experience this way or another) might have very little to do with the actual hard work the movers did for you. They are still getting paid only $8-$10 an hour, so tipping them is your way to say "thank you."

Don't punish them for working for the wrong company!
