Moving across town is stressful enough. Moving cross-country, starting a new job and buying your first home at the same time? Migraine-inducing. Rhino made me feel at ease from the first contact I had with them; they gave a realistic estimate that wasn't the cheapest out of the ones I got (nor was it the most expensive), but in my experience going with the lowest bidder doesn't always get the best results. I did pack a lot myself, but they were very thorough and careful with the bigger/more delicate items that I didn't prep.

Read more trosamoving.comI'm an amateur woodworker in my spare time, so seeing your creations packed up and entrusted to someone else for a three-thousand mile move might be nerve-wracking, if they weren't so professional. Everything arrived perfectly intact and without damage - they actually showed up earlier than the time they had given me, which worked perfectly for my schedule! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for short or long-distance moves.

The new issue of Mover’s Guide has been shipped to all Post Offices. Similar to last quarter’s shipment, the total quantity of Mover’s Guide copies sent to your facility may have been reduced. To get it, I always do a temporary change of address (using a family member's address). you do need a valid debit/credit card for verification (and it charges you $1.05). After entering your debit/credit info and submitting, you'll have the option to print the 10% off Best Buy coupon (among others). Most say exit afterwards, but I always CONFIRM the change of address, write down the confirmation number, then immediately google "cancel usps change of address". Enter your confirmation number, cancel the change of address, and you're done.

* There are ways around the $1.05 charge, but it's more work than it's worth IMO, and you still need to have a valid debit/credit card.

* I go through with the confirmation then cancel, as the first time I never actually confirmed yet it temporarily changed my address anyways. typical government website. so now I always confirm, then cancel and I haven't had a problem since.

* For those hesitant of entering such personal information via a link. simply google USPS mover's guide, and it will be one of the first links.

Do You Need to Tip Your Long Distance Movers?

Customers often ask us “Do I need to tip my movers when I’m moving long distance ?”. Of course tipping is absolutely not required by any means. However, if you feel your movers did an exceptional job, you may want to thank them with a tip. The next obvious question is “How much to tip movers?”

According to an Angie’s List member survey . the “Movers” category was cited by the highest number of survey respondents as the category in which they were most likely to leave a tip. Reading that made everyone here at Garrett’s feel really thankful for being so appreciated by our amazing customers!

How Much to Tip Movers?

We don’t want to seem biased here, so we turned to a couple of reputable sites in order to get their advice on tipping movers. Here is what we found:

Movers.com – “$5 per hour per mover. This would amount to $50 for a full day’s work. and $100 for two day’s work.”

Angie’s List – “For light moves, $10 to $20 tip per mover. For larger moves, a tip of $20 to $50 is appropriate.”

iTipping.com – “Typical ranges run $40 – $200 per person for a multi-day move.”

However, this site did note that many of the major moving companies they spoke to said tipping is not expected, and that it is up to the customer. Also, some moving companies already figure in a tip with long distance moving estimates.

We would advise calling your movers beforehand to see what they suggest on how much to tip movers.

If you do decide to tip, be sure and check if you will have one crew packing and loading your things, and another one that actually drives your belongings long distance. If so, you’ll know whether you need to tip your first crew after they pack the truck or if it can wait until the shipment is delivered.

What About Tipping by Percentage?

Although a lot of sites out there recommend tipping as a percentage of the total cost of the move, we don’t recommend that. especially if the move is long distance.

Read more twitter.com

Here’s why. The cost of a move includes many different things. It not only includes labor, but the cost of fuel as well. A tip could become very costly if it is done by percentage .

Tipping with Food

If you’ve ever been a part of a move, you know that it’s hard work (that’s probably why you hired a mover in the first place!). And all that hard work is sure to make your make your moving crew hungry and thirsty.

So imagine their delight when you surprise them with a cooler full of snacks and drinks. They’ll really appreciate the fuel for the long road ahead. If you are really happy with the way they loaded your things, consider even buying them lunch and/or dinner.

Tipping a Mover

Tipping a mover for the first time can be a difficult task if you don’t know the appropriate amount to tip. Here are some moving tips that will guide you on the moving day.

Tipping a mover depends on the quality of service that you get. If you don’t get the service you desire, you can refrain from giving a tip to the porter. If you have received excellent service and you goods are taken good care of, you can give a good tip to the moving professional.

Importance of Doing Research to Arrive at the Right Tip Amount

Understanding the market rate for tipping a mover is very important. You can do research on the Internet to find out what the right amount is. Again, this is very subjective and can differ from one place to another. The quantity of work can also determine the amount of tips. If the goods are less in number, you can pass on a few bucks. However, if the goods were heavy and the mover had to put in lots of effort in loading and off-loading, you can give throw in a few extra bucks.

Read more people.com

You can also observe the facial expressions of the mover when you are tipping him. If there are no expressions on the mover’s face there is a greater possibility he is not happy with the tip.

When you see a smiling face after giving a tip, you can assume that the amount is either sufficient or more than what was expected. Before tipping a mover, check to see you have the right change. If you have only have $100 bills in your wallet, it may be difficult to give the porter a tip. Make sure you have bills available in smaller denominations, so the mover won't have to provide change.

Tipping Multiple Movers: The Distribution Dilemma

If there is more than one mover it is appropriate to tip the head mover and ask him to divide the cash among his employees. When you are giving the tip to the head mover, make sure that the others see the amount that you are giving to assure that it is distributed equally.

You need to keep in mind the math when distributing the tips. If there are three movers and you want each of them to get $20. You will have to give $60 to the head mover. When giving the tip to the head mover, you should mention that you would like the money to be distributed equally.

When you hire movers from a local moving service ask a few friends or neighbors who have hired moving companies how much money they spent for tips. If you are traveling to a far off place, you may have to consider the destination area when tipping a mover.

When the service offered by the movers is excellent, the tips can range as high as $100. Once you have an idea of the correct tipping range, you can then decide on the exact amount that should be given as a tip. Check out www.longdistancemovingcompanies.com to get a better idea of the correct amount to consider when tipping a mover.

How Much Should You Tip Movers For Local And Long-Distance Moves?

Do you tip movers? Should you show your gratuity with greenbacks? While there is no obligation to tip movers, an Apartment Guide study found that семьдесят один percent of people tip moving crews. Here’s a look at the follow-up question this finding raises: How much should you tip movers, if you decide to tip them?

How Much Should You Tip on a Local Move?

Tipping movers long distance

While Apartment Guide’s survey found that most tipped moving crews, it did not find a consensus over how much to tip. Among those who tip:

Read more rebac.net

  • 39 percent tip десять percent of the move’s cost

  • 21 percent tip двадцать percent of the move’s cost

  • 17 percent base the tip on an hourly rate

  • 23 percent offer a flat amount to each person

These varied responses are evidence that tipping movers is not mandatory. Otherwise, there would be a set way of calculating the tip, as there is for tipping servers at restaurants. The percentage-based tips provide some guidance for determining an appropriate tip, however.

Read more juggleboxmoving.com

As an example, consider a local move that costs $1,000 and takes four movers one day to complete. A двадцать percent tip would be $200, and a десять percent tip would be $100. These amounts would be split by the crew. If tipping $200, each mover would receive $50. If tipping $100, each would get $25. No one will complain about receiving an extra $50 for a day of labor; $25 for eight hours of work figures out to just over $3 an hour, which is respectable.

Read more littleguys.com

Of course, your specific moving costs and situation will vary. This example simply shows that $25 to $50 per person for a day of labor is within the range of what people are tipping. If your move takes multiple days but is local, you may want to double these figures.

How Much Should You Tip on a Long-Distance Move?

When moving across several states, the price of your move quickly escalates. Making your tip десять to двадцать percent of the total bill becomes more than generous. For instance, a десять to двадцать percent tip on a cross-country move that is $10,000 would be between $1,000 and $2,000.

Read more bankrate.com

When you move long distance, you have good grounds to seek out a different tip-determining model. The price of a long distance move is much higher than that of a local move, but the labor involved does not rise proportionally. Much of the increase reflects the costs associated with transporting your goods. Tipping is a way of saying thanks for doing a good job, so there is no reason to tip on the fuel needed to drive a truck.

At this point, the figures calculated in the previous section are helpful. On local moves, $25 to $50 per person, per day appears to be a reasonable amount to tip movers. The same holds true for long distance moves. If a four-person crew spent one day loading your belongings, and another crew spends a day unloading them, then a total tip between $200 and $400 would be appropriate.

Read also northamerican.com

Of course, you would have to split that tip into two halves and give each moving crew their due. Thus, when tipping on a long distance move, you should have cash ready to give your movers at each end of the trip.

Again, you are under no obligation to tip a moving company. In fact, двадцать девять percent of the people who responded to the survey gave their movers nothing. If you do want to show your gratuity, though, many people tip десять to двадцать percent of the total, which works out to between $25 and $50 a day for many movers.

How Much is standart Tip for Movers

The amount you should tip the members of your moving crew isn't as set in stone as tipping at a restaurant or beauty salon. An American Moving & Storage Association spokesperson says moving crews don't expect tips, but that tipping about пять percent is customary. The general demeanor of the movers and how carefully they perform the job should influence how much you tip.

Tip About пять Percent

In an article posted on moving.com, the partner website of the American Moving & Storage Association, spokesperson John Bisney stresses that movers do not expect tips. People can tip movers, however, if they're happy with the quality of service the crew provides. Bisney reports that tipping пять percent is reasonable. If you choose to tip пять percent, divide this amount among the crew. For example, if hiring the crew costs $750, a пять percent tip is $37.50. If you had three movers, tip each mover about $12.50, or round up to $15 each.

Consider Professionalism and Care

Use the professionalism of the moving crew to help you decide whether to tip пять percent, slightly more, slightly less or nothing at all. Evaluate how the moving crew interacts with you. A friendly, courteous crew deserves more of a tip than one that is sullen. Pay attention to the care the movers pay to your items. A crew that deserves a tip is one that packs and handles your boxes and large items with care .

Provide Refreshments

Read more rebac.net

Regardless of whether you decide to tip, you can provide a comfortable working environment for the moving crew in several ways. It's a kind gesture to give refreshments to the movers -- have some bottles of water on hand and consider ordering a pizza or some submarine sandwiches around mealtime. Be conscientious of movers who are working in extreme temperatures. For example, leave the air conditioning on during a hot day or place a space heater in the garage on a cold day.

Tip for Piano Movers

A crew that moves your piano doesn't automatically deserve a tip, but consider the effort required to transport this heavy, awkward item and tip accordingly. The American Moving & Storage Association doesn't provide recommendations about tipping for moving a piano. However, Modern Piano Moving in Missouri notes that while tipping isn't required, the average tip given to its piano movers is between $20 and $40 per person .

Some people are uncomfortable talking about tipping. That could be because beyond the standard 15-20 percent for restaurant wait staff, there aren't a lot of rules to follow. It's common to tip people working in service industries, but should you tip movers ?

Don't think of movers as being in the service industry? Think again. Who else is responsible for handling such precious cargo as ALL of your possessions, some of them irreplaceable? Movers aren't necessarily expecting a tip, but it is appreciated. Remember how you struggled to get that mammoth sofa into your apartment? Imagine doing that all day long, day after day. It's incredibly hard work!

Just like any other service job, you tip movers based on performance. If your movers worked hard, took extra effort, and were especially careful with your things, acknowledge that with a nice tip.

Sodas and Food Wouldn't Hurt

  • Have bottled water and sodas available for the movers. If it's an all-day job, offer to order in or pick up lunch. Don't just assume they'd like McDonald's; ask what they'd like to eat.

  • It's a no-no to offer alcohol. Most moving companies have strict rules about that.

  • People always like to feel appreciated, so offer compliments on their work. Good old-fashioned courtesy and respect goes a long way.

How Much Should I Tip?

  • The amount of your tip is entirely up to you.

  • Industry standards are $20 per mover per day. When tipping movers, $10 per worker is fine if it's a half-day job.

  • If you have a different packing crew before the actual move, you may want to tip each worker on the crew after they complete packing. And the same goes for a different unloading crew on a longer job.

  • Individually acknowledging each mover is a good idea. If you pool your tip and give it to a supervisor or lead guy, he may not divvy it up equally. Plus the individual touch is a nice gesture.

  • If you have really heavy furniture, a crazy winding staircase or a steeply graded lot, consider upping the tip amounts.

Keep Distractions to a Minimum

  • Your pets should not be around for the move. It's not safe for them, and the movers shouldn't have to dodge a spooked cat .

  • If younger kids are there, have something to occupy them or someone designated to watch them so they aren't at risk or getting in the way of the movers.

  • If you're talkative when stressed out, you will want to chill a bit, because you may be distracting the moving staff from doing their jobs efficiently.

Tipping Movers Etiquette – Movers Gratuity Guide

The amount of the moving tips depends on the number of movers involved with your relocation

Read more flatrate.com

How do you tip your movers? Tipping movers but how much? You may ask yourself these questions when the move is wrapping up. If you have never moved before and now you are wondering what is the appropriate tip, first consider the type of your move – local or long distance. There are varieties of options for you how to tip. We should not even discuss the option of not tipping. It has become the norm, just like within the hospitality industry, to tip for the service you get, in our case when the move is over. Check out the rest of our tipping movers guidelines and gratuity article find find out the average tips for movers.

So now, if your move is ending, think about how to tip your hard working movers. As we said, this would depend on the type of your move, yet you have some additional ways to show your appreciation. Have some water, cold drinks and light snacks or sandwiches ready while your movers are working. Most times the movers will not have the time to go for lunch, or just sit down even if they have broth themselves something, so offering them a bite on the go will be highly admired. This will also help you on the final bill as the movers will work faster if they have the energy. Having tired movers moving your stuff up and down the stairs might cost you a lot more, especially if you are paying by the hour.

Tipping Movers Local Move

Tipping local movers is somehow easier because there are less people and fees involved. Typically, you will have around three movers, including the driver, and this would be the same crew at origin and at final destination. Still depending on the size of your move you may need more people. Thus, if your relocation is local, you can definitely consider the total cost and then calculate around fifteen to twenty percent tip for the movers. Either they will split the amount between themselves or you can do it. You can also tip each mover separately based on the quality of the job you believe he has done. This is rare though because most people prefer to give the tip to the supervisor or the driver, who is in most cases the lead person in the move, who will then divide it equally. Keep in mind that it is always a good idea to tip the individually as you cannot be sure that the foreman will split the tip with the other guys. The average tip for local moves can vary between $20 per person for smaller moves to 15% or more if you are moving a 2+ bedroom house or apartment.

Tipping Movers Long Distance

Consider extra tips for the movers if you have pianos, organs, pool-tables or when hoisting is needed.

Tipping at long distance move could be a bit more confusing. It all comes from the fact that more people are involved and the average moving cost is higher and includes more surcharges. When tipping movers for cross country moves. the size of your move and the distance you are moving will determine the cost hence your tip. However, at state to state moving jobs you may get different crews for loading and unloading. You may want to double check that with the supervisor, so you can take care of each moving crews. If you know that there will be only one crew doing all the work then you may leave the tip for the delivery day. The amount here will also vary depending on the cost. Keep in mind though that long distance moves cost more money because of travel and fuel fees, it’s not only based on the labor of the movers.

Thus, the tip percentage does not have to reflect the total cost. However, do not forget that long distance movies involve more work, like storage unloading and loading, and then the travel comes. Therefore, your movers, especially if it’s the same crew has done quite a lot of hard labor and the tip should reflect that. Sometimes the question after how to estimate moving costs is how much to tip the movers. The interstate moving tips may vary between 5% and 10% of the total amount depending on the number of people involved with your relocation.

Should I Tip for Appliance Delivery?

We contacted several appliance stores, including a local Sears and a smaller owner-operated kitchen appliance store and the consistent answer is no, you do not need to tip a delivery person for your newest tv, refrigerator, stove or oven. But even thought tipping is not standard, we've heard the case made that the work is difficult and even a small tip could make a big difference (see post below).

Most stores already charge a fee, often around $50-$70, for delivery and $0-$20 for the removal of old appliances, and this fee already pays for the delivery. Some stores will only drop off the item, but most stores will unpack the item and plug it in. For a gas stove, for example, they would even connect the stove to an existing gas line.

"No tip, you don't have to tip," one store manager told us. "You've already paid for delivery."

A manager of a small, independent appliance store told us that employees were permitted to accept gratuities if the customer wanted to tip, but it is not expected, and it is not the norm.

One of our readers, who delivers appliances, writes:

Comments: Delivering applicance is a very tough job. Appliances are very heavy; триста пятьдесят lbs for most refrigerators and about the same weight for the new, high-end washing machines like the G.E. HE4. Do that for восемнадцать stops a day and you'll have aches and pains. I have три swollen fingers and два band-aids on два seperate fingers. My lower back has a minor ache and my left knew hurts when i lift weight on it. Every night Ii come home I'm exhausted.

It's a necessity to continuously hustle just to get the job done. Every minute is spent doing something for the current customer or preparing appliances for the next customer while your partner is assisting the current customer. And yes, we install the appliances and test each one for function, water leaks and stability. The pay and hours is defiantly not worth the task. Every tip we get is appreciated.

It doesn't make sense to me why iTipping.com contacts Sears managers and askes them if the delivery person should get tipped. I doubt they even know how much service and hard work is needed to get the job done. This job is a service job. I understand the cost of appliances is big money and some people either cant afford to tip, or feel like they already spent enough money and choose not to tip the delivery person. Or maybe it's because it's not the norm for appliance delivery persons to get tipped. Everybody knows a paperboy and a waiter should get tipped, but who hears of the appliance delivery person getting tipped. It's hard work, and if only every customer tipped me and my partner just a mere $5 for the both of us, that would be $45 each a day ($5 x восемнадцать deliveries = $90 divided by два = $45 each). WOW.

Come on people, tip your appliance delivery persons just $5 (as long as your service is good). It's not often you'll buy a refrigerator, oven, washer,

dryer, treadmill, table saw, lawn tractor, mattresses. It's hard work and

we'll need the money later in life when our backs give out on us. =)

One of our readers, replies:

The delivery person who describes delivering восемнадцать major appliances a day must be somehow mistaken.

Consider a major appliance (washer, dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher, etc.) delivery: Even if the delivery persons start with a loaded truck, they must drive to each delivery location, find parking if it's in an urban area, unload the heavy appliance, unbox it (either before or after they), tote it into your home, unhook the existing appliance, replace with the new appliance, test the new appliance and perhaps briefly demonstrate major functions, haul the old appliance out of your home (either into your driveway or onto the delivery truck for removal), gather trash from unboxing the new appliance and put it in a trash container or the truck, spend a couple of minutes on paperwork for you to sign AND THEN REPEAT семнадцать MORE TIMES IN A DAY. Right.

Common Moving-Company Scams and How to Avoid Them

If you had to list your biggest fears about moving to a new home, what would they be?

You might be worried about the movers breaking something of value. Or you might worry that a box will get lost. Or that the movers won't show up on time -- or perhaps at all.

But the one thing you probably aren't worrying about may be the biggest concern of all: that the moving company you hired is a scam company, holding your stuff hostage until you fork over a wad of cash.

Read more ozmoving.com

"There are bad guys out there for a number of reasons, just like in any other industry," said Linda Bauer Darr, president and chief executive of the American Moving and Storage Association.

Darr said there are two primary scams consumers should watch out for when hiring movers: the hostage-goods scam and the advance-deposit scheme.

"In a hostage-goods situation, somebody has already moved your stuff and quoted you one price. But by the time you get to the destination, they're holding on to the goods and they ask you to pay an inflated price," she said. "We all know that when someone's charging twice the amount they originally quoted, something's gone afoul."

Read more livability.com

In a deposit scam, movers ask for a lot of money upfront and then never show.

Bill Borgman, senior vice president of Graebel Relocation, described a common hostage-goods situation: "Most of the scam artists have a few tractor-trailers and some warehouses, but relatively few. They will give a lowball estimate over the phone. The price will be too good to be true. They'll want the consumer to give a deposit upfront of двадцать пять percent of the total. They'll make the arrangements, pick up your boxes and leave. Once they knock on your new front door, they'll ask for a credit card or certified check for twice the amount. When the consumer doesn't have it, they'll drive away with all the goods. The consumer then gets an invoice for a grossly inflated amount, a bill for four or five times what they were originally going to pay."

How can you protect yourself from a moving scam? There are a few big red flags to watch out for, according to Steve J. Bernas, president and chief executive of the Chicago region of the Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois. They include:

  • The moving company has no interest in an on-site inspection of your goods, which is key to giving you an accurate estimate of your total moving cost.

  • The movers will accept only cash or a large deposit before they move.

  • The company's Web site has no local address or information about licensing.

We're not out to intnetionally scare people away from movers in general, because we all know that 95% of movers have excellent records and employ honest, hard-working folks. It's the other 5% that concern us.

I have to rebut your statements concerning me personally. If you'd truly read the Message Boards, you'd know that very rarely do I recommend an actual mover directly to a customer, and when I do, it's because I have knowledge of the company directly through personal or friend/family/neighbor's usage, or have the OK of a trusted industry professional who says the company has an excellent record in that home area. I never steer a customer towards a company for the sole purpose of gaining a referral fee. That would be exactly what you claim it is, irresponsible, and would not benefit the consumer.

Regarding sending consumers to the government agencies, I agree. I will give people direct links to the Protect Your Move website, and encourage people to research the mover thoroughly on their own (better than asking me to do it). We want consumers to know how to check licenses, verify the mover ie legit and logistically able to handle the move that the customer has been promised.

Our major concern is the customer who has been caught up in a scam. This is where the government is failing, currently. I know there's a lack of funding for enforcement, and most customers slip through the cracks, but that enforcement has improved dramatically even since I was scammed пять years ago. At that time all I could do was listen to a police dispatcher refusing to send out an officer to my location. The DOT took down my move's information in a formal complaint. The only reason anything happened from it was because this one company (now indicted) happened to have amassed a great number of complaints over several years and an investigation by the DOT-OIG was already underway.

Read more listotic.com

But what about the small companies that aren't large enough to get on the OIG's radar? The customers are having the same problems as those scammed by the larger companies, but they have nobody to turn to, nobody to help fix their problems. The scam movers operate like this until their creditors catch up with them, then they shut down and re-open again under a new name. Their old record is not tied to the new company in any way.

Please tell me what a customer might hear if they called the 800-DOT-SAFT number while their mover is demanding $5000 cash on a move estimated at $2000. What would a representative suggest? What would YOU suggest?

How do shipping and moving companies charge for a Long Distance move?

These companies charge by Cubic Feet, weight and packing materials used:

Cubic Feet: this is a simple calculation of the amount of space your possessions take up in their truck. Therefore the more room your items take up, the more money you will pay. You can see how easy they can scam you, whether it’s by not packing items tightly together or other unethical practices. Research the company extensively and make sure they have a strong name and reputation.

Read more mayflower.com

Weight: Other moving companies will weigh the truck empty and then again after loading with your possessions. The difference between the empty and full weight readings is the amount upon which you will be charged. These companies can scam you in a number of ways: They will weigh their truck with a practically empty gas tank, place your items on it and fill the tank with gas, billing you for the added weight of the fuel. This is moving fraud, plain and simple.

Packing: In this case the moving company will charge for the packing and shipping materials used and not for their time. Beware of their prices; ask for them before you sign a contract or before booking the job.

  • Typical scammers usually give you a low estimate price over the phone and promise to get the job done in a very short period of time, which makes you feel that you’ve got a bargain. This is one of the most popular moving scams to avoid. The good thing is that you can detect this immediately at your first interaction with the moving company which means you can recognize it right away, hang up the phone and move on to the next company.

  • They also may demand cash only payment or a large money deposit. Most scammers demand cash only. Usually a deposit would be about 10% to %20 – so beware of a possible scam scheme if the percentage in your case is significantly larger. If you pay by cash you cannot dispute the charges with your credit card company. In most cases the movers can’t be reached once your items are delivered.

  • Another sign to look out for a scam is if the movers don’t have a website – a standard company asset in двадцать один century – or there is a site, but without any information about licensing or insurance. It is required by law that all moving companies have their DOT number listed visible on their website. This is the government’s way to ensure that people who move will be using the services of a licensed company and to prevent moving scams. Ask your mover about their licensing information and check them with the Department of Transportation. Do not deal with unlicensed movers as there is a great change of becoming a victim of a scam scheme.

  • They also should give you a copy of your “Rights and Responsibilities” booklet required by Federal regulations. This booklet includes basic information you should be aware of.

  • Most of the reputable moving companies should have their own branded company trucks. Demand moving with a company owned vehicle and not a rental or unsigned vehicle.

  • Read moving reviews, ratings and consumer reports before booking. By reading other peoples’ testimonials and complaints online you will be prepared and know which company provides better moving services. By checking out some reviews you will also know what unfortunate scamming situations other people have been to and how you can beware and be careful for these not to happen to you.

  • It is a good idea to deal with BBB certified movers .

  • When you call the mover, the telephone is answered with a generic “Movers” or “Moving company”, rather than the company’s name.

  • The movers demand cash or a large deposit before the move.

  • On moving day, a rental truck (usually a Ryder, Penske or a Budget truck) arrives rather than a company-owned and marked fleet truck. Note that sometimes even the large reputable companies hire rental trucks, but this usually is only in the busy summer months. This should not worry you once your moving company is well checked and you are sure you can rely on it for your move.

  • The moving company website does not offer information about licensing or insurance as they are required to do so by law. This is one of the most obvious signs for a potential scam you can easily spot.

  • They have only good reviews (written by employees) or only bad reviews (written by dissatisfied customers). Yes, rogue moving companies can be very industrious in their scam plans.

  • You are asked to sign blank pages in your Bill of Lading on the moving day – legitimate movers would never ask you to sign blank pages.

  • You are being denied a full value protection plan for your expensive items. Professional local and cross country moving companies should offer you multiple insurance options for your load.

  • The moving company you have chosen is not only licensed and insured, but a member of association that has established certain standards promoting fair business. Such a company will want to keep its reputation so it is not very likely to expect scam from it.

  • It is always good to verify if they are BBB accredited business.

  • If they are a member of the American Moving and Storage Association.

  • Make photos of your stuff (especially the expensive furniture pieces) – just in case make sure you photograph all the valuable items you have in the house to be moved. In case you decide to go to court, you will have evidence.

  • Make photos of the movers and their trucks. See if your items will travel in the same truck.

  • Demand a copy of the contract – this is extremely important. Make sure you never sign blank papers. Usually this is an apparent evidence and a clear signal to avoid a moving scam.

  • Dispute credit card charges in case you think you are being scammed.

  • Write a review and a rip off report on the mover here .

  • Contact the Department of Transportation and file a complaint with them.

  • Write a BBB complaint.

  • Contact an attorney to handle your case. Make sure you collect enough evidence.

IRS Moving Deductions – Don't Let Moving Tax Your Wallet

One benefit that can help take the sting out of the cost of moving is that the Internal Revenue Service allows the deduction of certain expenses from your taxes as long as you meet its criteria.

If you are moving as part of a job relocation and your employer is covering all of the costs, there won't be much, if anything, for you to deduct. If not, you’ll want to make sure to keep track of the costs that the IRS will allow you to take.

Do you qualify for IRS moving deductions?

First, the IRS will only allow moving deductions for job-related reasons. This can be a new job, a transfer or even a first job. This means, however, you can't move because you like the weather better someplace else.

To make sure that you have moved because of a job, the IRS requires you to be employed full time for тридцать девять weeks (about десять months) of the first двенадцать months of your move and in the general area of your new job location. The тридцать девять weeks does not have to be spent at the same job, just at a full-time job in the same area. The IRS will not look to get its money returned, however, if you are laid off or are transferred again.

The second criterion is the пятьдесят miles rule. Some people think they qualify if their new home is пятьдесят miles or more from their old one or that their new job location is пятьдесят miles or farther from their old job location. Neither is correct. The IRS requires that the commute from your old home to your new job location be at least пятьдесят miles longer that your old commute.

For example, if you lived десять miles from your old job location, the new job location would have to be шестьдесят miles from your previous residence. Anything less and you will not be allowed to deduct moving expenses.

If you own your own business, you can relocate and take the moving deductions as long as you meet the пятьдесят miles and тридцать девять weeks criteria. If you are self-employed, you will need to meet the пятьдесят miles and a longer семьдесят восемь weeks rule. Those who are self-employed, whether at a business location or at home, must work full time in the new location for семьдесят восемь weeks (about двадцать months) of the first двадцать четыре months after moving.

What are deductible moving expenses?

Because the IRS has a short list of allowable deductions, it won’t be too difficult to keep track. Here’s an outline of what you can expect to take off your taxes:

  • The cost of packing and transporting your household goods and personal effects, whether you do it yourself or hire professional movers, is fully deductible. This also includes the cost of insuring your belongings during the move.

  • Any costs to connect and disconnect utilities because of the move.

  • Moving expenses tax deduction
  • The cost of transporting your cars and pets to a new home.

  • You can also deduct for personal belongings that are not stored at your old residence. The cost, however, can not be more than if you had moved those items from your residence. For example, if you have belongings stored with a family member or in storage in another city where you had lived previously, you can deduct the expenses of moving those items to your new residence. If, say, the distance from the stored belongings to your new location is greater, it is likely more expensive to move them. You can still take a deduction for moving those items, but only as much as if you had them with you at your old home and were moving them to your new location.

  • The cost of storing your belongings for no more than тридцать consecutive days after the move is also a deductible expense.

  • You can deduct lodging expenses for one day at your old residence after your belongings have been moved.

  • Only deductions for one trip for you and your household members are allowed. This means. For example, you cannot deduct the cost of multiple trips to house hunt. You and your household members do not have to travel the same way or at the same time.

  • If you are traveling by car, you can deduct your actual expenses for gasoline, oil, lodging, parking fees and tolls. Instead of itemizing, you can choose to deduct восемнадцать cents per mile (up from шестнадцать cents on две тысячи шесть tax returns). You cannot deduct expenses for meals, sightseeing or repairs, maintenance, insurance or depreciation on your car.

That means you don't need to itemize. You can take this deduction in addition to the standard deduction or in addition to any itemized deductions .

There are three criteria for deducting moving expenses.

Criteria 1: The move is closely related to starting work at the new location.

The IRS will allow a person to deduct moving costs if the person relocates within one year from the time he or she first reported to work at his or her new location.

Example: Sally moves from Seattle to Austin on July 1st.

She starts working at a job in Austin on November 1st. Since she started working within one year of the time she moved, she meets the "closely related to starting work " test.

Note that the example works just as well if we reverse the time frame. Suppose that Bernard starts working in Austin on April 1st. Later, he moves all his furniture and belongings (which he had put in storage) from Seattle to Austin on July 1st. He still meets the "closely related to starting work test." Why? Because he moved within one year from the time he started working at his new location.

Exception: people who work outside the United States, and then retire and relocate back to the United States, can deduct their moving expenses -- even though they are not starting work at their new location.

Criteria 2: The move is far enough to satisfy the distance test

First, measure the distance from a person's previous residence to their new workplace. Let's call this measurement A .

Second, measure the distance from a person's previous residence to their previous workplace. Let's call this measurement B .

If A is at least пятьдесят miles larger than B. then the move satisfies the distance test.

"Your move will meet the distance test," the IRS explains. "if your new main job location is at least пятьдесят miles farther from your former home than your old main job location was from your former home."

Example: Sally used to live and work in Seattle. When she lived in Seattle, her commute from her home to her job was десять miles. Then she relocated to Austin. The distance from her previous home (in Seattle) to her new job location (in Austin) is about 2,129 miles (according to Google Maps). Since 2,129 miles is "at least пятьдесят miles farther" than her old commute of десять miles, Sally's move meets the distance test.

Exception: members of the military can deduct moving expenses even if they don't meet the distance test. To qualify for this exception, the person must be on active duty and relocate because of a permanent change of station. See the Members of the Armed Forces section of Publication пятьсот двадцать один for more details.

Criteria 3: Work at the new location long enough to satisfy the time test

People will satisfy the time test in two ways:

b. they work full-time as a self-employed person for at least тридцать девять weeks during the first двенадцать months following their move and at least семьдесят восемь weeks during the двадцать четыре month period following their move.

  • Members of the military on active duty relocating due to a permanent change of station

  • People who work abroad and then retire and relocate back to the United States

  • People who are the surviving spouse of a person who worked abroad and relocate back to the United States after their spouse's death.

  • People whose job at their new location ends because they became disabled or died.

  • People who are transferred to another location for their employer's benefit, and people who laid off for any reason except willful misconduct.

Not everyone will qualify for this type of tax deduction, but the Internal Revenue Service has two basic rules. One is what it calls the "distance test," which is a requirement that the new home is located at least пятьдесят miles further than your prior work location was from your old home. If you did not have a workplace, or if you worked from home before the move, then the new job must be at least пятьдесят miles from your old home. While this may sound a little confusing, IRS form три тысячи девятьсот три has a simple worksheet that will help you figure this out.

The second IRS requirement is the "time test," which states that you must have had тридцать девять weeks of full-time employment in the двенадцать months following the move. This is where things can get a little complicated, as a move late in the year wouldn't leave enough time to have passed to meet the requirement before the tax year is over, and the deduction can't be taken the following year.

However, the IRS will allow you to take the deduction if you expect to work at least тридцать девять weeks at full-time status following the move. If the year passes and you don't meet the requirement, you can amend your tax return by filing Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. More simply, you could also report the amount deducted as income on the next year's tax return as "other" income.

There are some exceptions to the time test requirement, in the case that:

  • Your employer transfers you at their request.

  • You are laid off from the job for any reasons other than willful misconduct.

  • The job ends because you become disabled.

  • You meet certain requirements for retirees or survivors living outside the United States (see the IRS website for details if you're living abroad).

  • You are in the armed forces and a permanent change of station is behind the move.

  • The form is being filed for someone who has passed away.

Qualified expenses include three key areas of moving-related costs, but do not include any for which your employer has reimbursed you.

Deductible expenses include:

Travel Costs

Transportation and housing or lodging expenses for yourself and household members while moving from the old place to the new home can be eligible. The cost of meals during the travel is not part of the deal, however, but the rental of a vehicle may be included. Keep receipts for tolls, gas purchases, and hotel charges to apply to the deduction.

Packing Materials and Shipping

Hold onto the receipts from any moving and storage companies you use, and even for any boxes you purchase, because the costs associated with packing, crating, and transporting your personal property and household goods can be deducted. You may also be able to include the cost of storing and insuring these items while in transit, and even costs associated with transporting family pets can be deducted.

Utility Fees

You can deduct the costs of connecting or disconnecting utilities if you're charged any associated fees. Late fees and reimbursable deposits don't count toward the deduction.

Other fees won't be covered, such as any part of the purchase price of the new home, or any costs of related to buying or selling either home, or homeowner's association fees. Renters can't deduct any charges related to breaking or entering into a lease, nor can anyone deducted other money lost, such as unused gym membership dues or other subscription services.
